1. How has the material, clay, determined the direction of your work visually?
It's the opposite for me. The direction of the work has determined the materials I use and the atmosphere I fire in. What I like to do has influenced the direction, however.

2. Since your work is considered to be functional art, are you ever tempted to do non-functional pieces?
I'm making some pots currently that don't have any specific function; but, they are still containers. That's as far away from functional as I get. So tempted? Not really. In my opinion, work that has a connection to history usually seems to be of more substance. So figurative or functional often seem more valid than purely decorative. I'm kind of a purist, though.
