ARTIST Q & A

1. How necessary is it for you to start and complete your painting on site?
It is always more important for me to start rather than complete a painting on location. This gives me a chance to “feel” the place and to capture a certain moment of light. Since light is constantly shifting and changing, the whole spirit of a landscape can change dramatically at different times of the day. I usually complete work in my studio, where my memories, thoughts, and impressions of the landscape will enliven the painting and allow my voice to come through.

2. How do you choose a landscape to paint?
I am amazed at the mysterious combination of elements that draw me to a certain landscape, because when I look over all the different motifs I love, the common threads seem to have to do with a powerful “sense of place”. There must also be a remarkable kind of light at play, which creates a certain drama and saturation of color, thus enhancing the magic inherent within the landscape. I find that this is no less than honoring something unnameable and beyond appearances…it is painting a prayer.

3. What medium do you paint with?
I paint in oils and pastels primarily, but sometimes I use gouache, which is water-based tempera paint, when I need to transport a more compact painting kit in my backpack. I love variety in the process of painting, and in the wonderful ways different media express color. In all, there is a smooth blending quality I use in all my work with both paints and pastels.
