ARTIST Q & A:

How did you first become interested in making marbles?
I had been collecting old marbles and saw Gerry Colman make one, and I knew I had to try it.

What compositional or constructural components differentiate "contemporary" from "traditional" marbles?
The old marbles were made with a machine or hand made with a cricible of hot glass and a glory hole (to keep it hot while working the glass into shape) and cutting the marbles with a tool. The contemporary marbles I make are made by heating the glass with a torch and using propane and oxygen. Each color is applied one at a time and melted in. I use a graphite mold to help round the marble, and put it in a kiln to anneal when it is finished.
